Rotation 3- QHC- IM Reflection

I  rotated at QHC. I felt as thought I learned a lot in Internal Medicine at Queens Hospital Center. I found that working alongside PGY-2 and PGY-3 students helped to cement my clinical education. One thing I particularly enjoyed about this rotation were the many educational opportunities as Queens Hospital Center has conferences on current medical topics, student and preceptor presentations, and conferences on current medical topics. I think this rotation made me improve my presenting skills; I am no longer nervous when presenting new patients to team rounds. Before this rotation, I did not realize just how closely different healthcare specialties work so closely during rounds. Internal Medicine allowed me to see a patient from admission to discharge and it exposed me to so many different disease etiologies.

In the future, I think it would benefit students to stick with one particular team over the 5 week period only because it is a relatively short timeline (5 weeks) vs the medical students (12 weeks).

My biggest issue was gathering all pertinent labs and deciding which of the labs I should present was the biggest issue I had. I think as time went on, my skills really did improve. In the future rotations I am going to work on understanding pathophysiology and mechanisms of actions in depth.

One of my goals for this rotation was to better interpret ekgs. I think I did moderately well. I did make vast improvements from when I began the rotation, seeing “real-life” ekgs was really great to test my knowledge.

I had a great experience  QHC IM Dept. Honestly, before beginning my rotation, I was very scared about pharmacology and drawing blood but everyone was open to teaching.
